Global Commission on Democracy and Multilateralism
The Global Commission on Democracy and Multilateralism, established by Club de Madrid, seeks to harness the untapped potential of multilateral frameworks to advance democratic governance, and to explore how democratic values can, in turn, reinforce the legitimacy and effectiveness of multilateral cooperation.
The Commission seeks to identify actionable ways to align democracy support with multilateral renewal, generating proposals for how international cooperation can better support accountable, participatory, and rights-based governance. Working across two phases of evidence-gathering and deliberation, it will produce a high-level strategic report and three thematic policy papers, alongside targeted advocacy at key international fora. Partners include International IDEA, the European Democracy Hub, and the Open Government Partnership.
EPD, through its European Democracy Hub initiative, is leading the Working Group on Reinforcing Democratic Norms through Regional Mechanisms. The project has two other partners: International IDEA is leading the Working Group on Revitalising Democracy within Global Institutions, and the Open Government Partnership (OGP) is leading the Working Group on Innovating Democratic Cooperation through Multilateralism.
